DCDT MINISTER CELEBRATES WORLD RADIO DAY

The Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, joins the global village in celebrating the 13th World Radio Day (WRD).

February 13th was proclaimed World Radio Day by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), in 2011, and adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2012.

Over the years, Radio has continued to be a trusted, reliable, far-reaching medium, which has established itself as a valuable source of information. Radio remains a relevant and resilient broadcasting tool.

This year’s WRD is celebrated under the theme, “A century informing, entertaining and educating”. The theme acknowledges that radio has remained the most trusted and most widely consumed medium over the decades, with a unique ability to reach the widest possible audience and promote culture and diversity. It equally plays a very important role in informing, educating, and entertaining the society.

“Radio has evolved over the years, yet it has consistently continued to embrace new technologies to remain relevant. As we have committed to the society, we have completed the most important part of Broadcasting Digital Migration process, which has freed up the spectrum for better penetration and reach. This will open more platforms for radio,” says Minister Mondli Gungubele.

“As we celebrate World Radio Day today, we equally celebrate the men and women behind the 19 SABC covering almost all official South African languages, all 18 commercial and over 250 community radio stations who have kept us informed for all these years, and further testament to the indelible power of radio to inform, educate and entertain. We encourage them to continue telling the stories and keep radio relevant for the future centuries.” concluded Minister Gungubele.
