The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies is hosting the 3rd Meetings of the Digital Economy Working Group and the Task Force on Artificial Intelligence, from 9 to 13 June. The meetings will take place at Protea Hotel, The Ranch and Conference Centre in Polokwane.

The Digital Economy Working Group focuses on digital public infrastructure, digital skilling, and security in the digital economy, whilst the Working Group of Artificial Intelligence will look at issues of AI Governance and ethical usage of AI.

The aim of the two meetings is to have broad-ranging inputs and discussions on the following priorities:

  • Connectivity for inclusive digital development
  • Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and
  • Digital Innovation Ecosystems and unleashing the potential for MSMEs, and
  • Equitable, inclusive and just artificial intelligence

The two meetings in Polokwane will take place concurrently, with the Digital Economy Working Group Meeting taking place from 9 to 11 June, and the AI Task Force Meeting Taking place from 12 to 13 June.

The Minister of the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies, Solly Malatsi, will deliver the Opening Address on 9 June. He will be joined by officials in the province, including the Premier of Limpopo Province, the Executive Mayor of Capricorn District Municipality and the Executive Mayor of Polokwane Metropolitan Municipality.

South Africa, through the Sherpa’s office and the Presidency, also established a number of high-level Task Forces, reflecting some of the priorities of our country’s G20 Presidency. One of these is the Task Force on Artificial Intelligence, Data Governance and Innovation for Sustainable Development, which is being led by DCDT, DSTI and DIRCO. All of these activities are a precursor to the main G20 Summit in November 2025, which will include Heads of State and Government, together with their representatives, from the G20 Members and Guest countries, as well as Heads of International organisations.

The meeting brings together experts and policy makers from around the world and aims to set the agenda for harnessing the digital potential of economies.
