CAPE TOWN – The G20 Digital Economy Working Group (DEWG) kicked off yesterday, 22 September 2025 under South Africa’s G20 Presidency, with delegates from across the world meeting in Cape Town to chart the course for a more inclusive, secure, and people-centered digital future.
Opening the session, Director-General Nonkqubela Jordan-Dyani, Chairperson of the Working Group, welcomed G20 and invited guest countries, reaffirming South Africa’s commitment to a digital economy that leaves no one behind.
“This marks a significant milestone for our Presidency,” said DG Jordan-Dyani. “We had focused, values-driven conversations, grounded in equity, access and impact not just technology. It’s clear that we share a vision of digital transformation that truly serves the people.”
The first day’s deliberations centered on two critical priorities:
- Universal and Equitable Digital Inclusion: Delegates exchanged views on how countries can enable meaningful connectivity and digital participation through affordable access, skills development, local content, and inclusive regulation.
- Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI): Recognised as a key lever for accelerating development, delegates explored how DPI can enable inclusive service delivery, strengthen governance, and support innovation in an increasingly digital world.
“The emphasis is not just on the ‘what’ of digital transformation, but the ‘how’ and the ‘for whom’,” added Jordan-Dyani. “We’re focused on systems that are trusted, inclusive, and sustainable.”
The Working Group will continue until tomorrow, with negotiations still to take place on:
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) for sustainable development
- Digital Innovation Ecosystems, including support for MSMEs and startups
The DEWG’s outcomes will feed into the Ministerial Meeting scheduled for later this week, and
ultimately into the G20 Leaders’ Declaration.
