The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies joins the ICT community in mourning the passing away of a legendary pioneer of digital transformation, the founder and Group CEO of ICT-Works, a 100% black women-owned, founded, led and managed ICT solutions company, Ms. Xoliswa Kakana who passed away on Thursday, 30 October 2025 and will be laid to rest on Saturday 08 November 2025.

The late Ms Kakana was an inspirational trailblazer in shattering the glass ceiling of a race and male dominated ICT industry. A decorated engineer boasting qualifications from various prestigious international institutions such as MIT and Havard University, she leaves behind a lesson and challenge to women and the previously marginalized members of society that with passion and drive nothing is impossible.

“Ms Kakana initiated and mentored many of us in the ICT sector. Her passion for women empowerment as experienced in her active participation in Women in ICT fora remains a legacy to be emulated. She generously shared her expertise honed over a long period of global exposure in the technical, commercial and regulatory side of the ICT sector. A solution-driven and innovative leader and entrepreneur, Ms Kekana has left an indelible mark in the ICT sector

and her legacy will live on and serve as a source of inspiration to generations to come.” remarked the Director-General of the DCDT, Ms Nonkqubela Jordan-Dyani.

The Department conveys its condolences to the Kakana family, friends and relatives as well as her colleagues in the Board of Directors of ICT-Works, partners and employees of the company. May you find comfort in the selfless life and sweet memories of her contributions in the lives of the masses she impacted.
