The Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Mr. Mondli Gungubele (MP), has reaffirmed government’s unwavering commitment to accelerating South Africa’s digital transformation agenda, ensuring that connectivity, digital services, and digital skills reach citizens in every part of the country.
Speaking at the opening of the Africa Tech Festival 2025 in Cape Town, Deputy Minister Gungubele highlighted that digital transformation must be a driver of inclusion, innovation, and economic opportunity.
“Technology must be a great equaliser,” he said. “Every community whether urban, township or rural deserves access to fast, reliable and affordable digital services.”
The Deputy Minister outlined the Department’s key priorities for advancing South Africa’s digital economy, including:
• Expanding broadband infrastructure and accelerating 4G/5G deployment
• Increasing access to smart devices for households, schools and businesses
• Scaling digital skills for youth, workers and entrepreneurs
• Strengthening cybersecurity and data protection
• Digitising public services through platforms such as MyMzansi
He emphasised that government continues to work closely with industry partners, public entities and the global technology community to ensure that digital innovation supports job creation,
competitiveness, and improved service delivery.
“South Africa must be a place where innovators can thrive, where small businesses can scale, and where technology simplifies life by reducing queues, lowering costs, and improving access
to vital services,” Gungubele said.
Addressing delegates from across Africa and around the world, the Deputy Minister stressed that digital progress requires collective effort.
“Connectivity, skills and innovation cannot be pursued in silos. We have a shared responsibility to ensure that no South African is left behind in the digital economy,” he concluded.
