SABC Board Agrees To Table Retrenchment Alternatives At Next Board Meeting

 ALL MEDIA HOUSES: Immediate Release

As part of the on going engagement process between the Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams and Minister of Employment and Labour Thulas Nxesi and SABC Board and Executives as well as Unions organising at SABC, the two Ministers met with the Unions and leadership of SABC jointly and later separately.

This in their efforts to ensure that parties find a win win situation during their discussions and negotiations on solutions regarding the financial situation facing the public broadcaster.

In the shared spirit of exhausting all other available opportunities to avert or mitigate the possible retrenchments, The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) Board has agreed to address proposals made by Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams and Minister of Employment and Labour Thulas Nxesi, at the next board meeting of the public broadcaster. This meeting is scheduled to be held this Friday.

This is after the two Ministers made several proposals and alternatives to retrenchments at the public broadcaster.

“We were encouraged by the attitude and the spirit of the meeting between ourselves and the SABC board and its executive management, and earlier with the unions, and indeed there are great signs of progress and good will among the parties," said

Minister Ndabeni-Abrahams. Minister Ndabeni-Abrahams had and continues to maintain that all available avenues and opportunities must be explored and exploited in averting a possible retrenchments given the painful nature of retrenchments, more so given the period the country finds itself at in relation to employment opportunities.
